There is always something going on at DVCC! There are Sunday club rides throughout the year, ad hoc rides during the week and social evenings on the last Tuesday of the month at The Swan, Kirkgate.

Here are some highlights you can expect in a typical DVCC year;

Spring

  • Early season club trip to somewhere warm (e.g. Mallorca, Gran Canaria)
  • Lots of great Sportives (e.g. Team Townend Challenge, Fred Whitton etc.) and reliability rides hosted by other local clubs (e.g. Team XIII, Velo CC)
  • Start of the time trial season. These start from Cockermouth School and complement the Velo CC TT events

Summer

  • The DVCC Lakes and Dales weekend, a 200 miles weekend ride starting at Cockermouth with an overnight stay near Kirkby Lonsdale
  • Clives Cumbrian Way, a 256 miles weekend ride with an overnight stay at Grange over Sands
  • Family-friendly cyclo-cross race at Copeland Sports Academy in Whitehaven in August or early September, organised by DVCC

Autumn

  • DVCC members regularly take part in organised “Raids”, tough multi-day tours averaging 100 miles a day (e.g. Sardinia in 2018)
  • The 60 mile “Christmas Cracker” sportive from Grasmere
  • Cyclo cross events such as the “Monster miles” around Skiddaw and the “Three peaks” in Yorkshire
  • The annual general meeting (AGM) at The Swan, 56 Kirkgate, Cockermouth, CA13 9PH

Winter

  • Annual DVCC Christmas ride visiting a range of local drinking establishments!
  • Mountain biking and cyclo cross are popular when the roads are icy

Armchair/roadside cycling

At DVCC we are enthusiastic followers of the sport of cycling, and members will regularly travel to watch the pros at work! A typical year for the professional sport is as follows;

Spring

  • Cyclo cross, with the main UCI events based in the Benelux countries
  • Track events, including the Nationals and Revolution events at the Manchester Velodrome. The final 6 day event is held at Mallorca
  • Road, with the early season Pro Tours in Australia, the Middle East and Spain/Portugal followed by the Italian, cobbled and Ardennes spring classics (e.g. Milan San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liege) and ending with the first of the big three week tours, the Giro d’Italia
  • Cross county and downhill mountain biking, including the UCI events and stage races such as the Cape Epic

Summer

  • Road, the Tour de Yorkshire and the Aviva Women’s Tour make for great viewing. The Tour de France is the main event, proceeded by the Dauphinee and Tour de Suisse. Summer ends with the epic La Vuelta (the Tour of Spain)
  • Crit racing, the UK Tour series runs from May to September, with a regular visit to the Barrow in Furnace
  • Cross country, downhill and enduro mountain biking, the UCI downhill event at Fort William is a highlight on the UK calendar

Autumn

  • Road, the World championships and the Giro di Lombardia (also known as “the race of the falling leaves”) are the highlights at the end of road season
  • The Tour of Britain often visits the Lake District in September
  • Track events, the 6 day event series starts and are great entertainment with London and Berlin the highlights http://sixday.com/

Winter

  • Cyclo cross, the season starts
  • Track events, the 6 day events continue and the UCI world tour and the UK based Revolutions series begin
