A time trial is an event where competitors race against the clock and each other, setting off on a measured course at intervals. The winner is the rider with the fastest time. At the highest level riders use specialised bikes and clothing, optimised for minimum aerodynamic drag. The “race of truth” as the time trial is also known is an opportunity to test yourself against the clock, and against your peers – often the truth is that you need to get out on the bike more!
Time trials are governed in the UK by https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/, and some great advice on riding a 10 miler is on https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/knowledge/training/get-started/article/izn20150401-Road-Riding-a-10-mile-time-trial-0
At Derwent Valley Cycling Club we run a series of time trial events that start on Thursdays at 7pm from Cockermouth School, Castlegate Drive, CA13 9HF using the 10 mile long Cockermouth to Dubwath course.
The Derwent Valley Cycling Club time trial dates for 2022 are as follows:
- May 26th
- June 9th
- June 23rd
- July 7th – New ‘Higham Hilly’ route. Still 10 miles but with cheeky climb thrown in!
- July 21st
- August 18th – Hill climb
Both time trial and road bikes are allowed so please come along and give it a go. Helmets and front and rear lights are mandatory for safety (we may have some spare lights available for those who forget but please don’t rely on us). The charge to enter is £5 and is payable (by cheque or cash) on the night to the Derwent Valley Cycling Club marshals.
On registering you will be given a start time and at the end of the event you will receive a time for your ride. The results will also be posted on this website. Finally, in order to ride you will need to be registered with an approved British Cycling club (such as Derwent Valley Cycling Club). If you would like to sign up to join Derwent Valley Cycling Club please click on this link.
Velo Club Cumbria also run an extensive series of time trial events (the Cumbrian League) for those wishing to do more; see the following link for more details http://www.veloclubcumbria.com/time-trials. Time trial and hill climb events are run on a weekly basis from April through to the end of October across a range of locations and distances.
Finally, we are always looking for volunteers to help marshal our events. No previous experience is required so please come along if you want to support your friends and the club.
